The Elsberry FFA is one of the few FFA Chapters in the state of Missouri to have their own livestock barn. The barn was acquired in 2009 and modified to include hog stalls, lamb stalls and runs, a room for rabbits & chickens, and a supply room. In 2010, a section of land next to the barn was fenced to hold goats and lambs, and in 2012 a chicken coop was added behind the barn.
The barn allows students to raise animals for their SAE projects. It is an fantastic opportunity for many students who would otherwise be unable to raise livestock due to land restrictions or lack of accomodations. Under the guidance and expertise of FFA Advisors students learn how to feed, care for, and even breed their animals.
The Elsberry FFA Alumni & Parent Association supports their efforts by raising funds to buy equipment and make improvements to the barn. In the fall of 2012, the Alumni & Parent Association along with grant money will be used to move a nearby outbuilding close to the barn in order to provide restrooms and additional space. One of our goals is to raise enough money to offset the cost students incur in acquiring and feeding their animals and the entry fees required to show them throughout Missouri.
